What Claude and ChatGPT can do with Instagram (2026)
"Connect Instagram to Claude" can mean reading your stats, scheduling posts, writing captions or answering comments and DMs. Each job takes a different route, and some routes put your account at risk. Here is what works as of October 2026, and what doesn't.
Written by CommentKeyword. We make the comment-to-DM tool in this guide, so we also say where other tools fit better.
Short answers
- Claude can write captions, Reel scripts and carousel copy with no connection to Instagram at all.
- For analytics and scheduling, use a connector from an analytics or scheduling tool. CommentKeyword does neither.
- To reply to comments and DM the people who comment, Claude can set up CommentKeyword for you, on the Free plan too.
- Skip any tool that asks for your Instagram password or a session cookie. Use tools that connect through Meta's official API.
- Official API connections need an Instagram professional account: Business or Creator.
What Claude can do with Instagram, and how
Find the job you want done. Status as of October 2026.
| What you want | How to do it from Claude | CommentKeyword |
|---|---|---|
| Write captions, hooks, Reel scripts and carousel text | No connection needed. Paste your notes, a transcript or screenshots into the chat. | Not needed |
| Analytics and insights: what performed, when to post | An analytics connector. Metricool, Windsor.ai and Supermetrics are listed in Claude's connector directory. | No |
| Publish or schedule posts and Reels | A scheduling tool with a connector or MCP server, such as Metricool or Buffer. Claude writes the post; the tool publishes it. | No |
| Reply automatically to comments that contain a keyword | A comment automation that Claude sets up: the keyword and the replies. The service then answers every matching comment. | Yes |
| DM everyone who comments a keyword (comment-to-DM) | A comment-to-DM tool on the official API. Claude creates the automation; the DM goes out as a private reply to each comment. | Yes, Free plan too |
| Read and answer your DM inbox | Few connectors do this. With CommentKeyword, Claude doesn't read your inbox: the first DM is automatic, and replies continue in CommentKeyword's Inbox or with an AI agent you set up there. | Partly |
| Research other accounts, hashtags or competitors | Mostly scraping tools, which collect public data outside Meta's API. Most Instagram servers in the official MCP Registry are scrapers. | No |
Based on each vendor's own pages, checked in October 2026. Features and plans change, so check with the vendor before you decide. For a side-by-side of the servers themselves, see Instagram MCP servers compared.
Four routes, and when to use each
No connection: content creation
Claude doesn't need access to your account to brainstorm ideas, write captions in your voice, script a Reel or turn a blog post into a carousel. Upload screenshots of posts that did well so it can see what works for your audience.
Analytics and scheduling connectors
Analytics and social media tools offer connectors that bring your Instagram data into Claude or publish for you. You connect Instagram inside that tool, and Claude talks to the tool. Metricool, Windsor.ai and Supermetrics are in Claude's connector directory, as of October 2026.
CommentKeyword: comments and DMs
Claude creates and manages comment-to-DM automations: the keyword, the public reply and the DM. CommentKeyword then replies to every matching comment and sends the DM through Meta's official API. It doesn't publish and doesn't read your stats.
Avoid: password and cookie tools
Some Instagram MCP servers, including popular ones on GitHub, log in with your username and password or a copied session cookie instead of Meta's official API. The convenience isn't worth the risk to your account.
Official API vs password or cookie tools
How a tool reaches your account matters more than its feature list.
Official API
- You connect through Meta's own login screen and approve specific permissions.
- The tool never sees your Instagram password.
- Meta's developer policies apply: people must opt in before they get a message (for example, by commenting), and spam isn't allowed.
- It needs a professional account (Business or Creator), and it can only do what the API allows.
Password, cookie or browser-bot tools
- The tool logs in as you, with your password or a session cookie kept on your computer or on someone else's server.
- Whoever gets that password or cookie can act as you.
- Instagram never approved this access. If it flags the logins or the activity as automated, your account is the one that gets challenged or restricted.
- It can stop working whenever Instagram changes its app or website.

Which Instagram account you need
Tools that use Meta's official API only work with Instagram professional accounts: Business or Creator. A personal account can't be connected.
- You don't need Meta Verified or a new account.
- You switch a personal account to professional in the Instagram app. If your profile is private, switching can make it public.
- In CommentKeyword you connect the professional account in Settings → Instagram, through Meta's login. You never give CommentKeyword your password.
Claude Code, Claude Desktop, claude.ai and ChatGPT
Where you use Claude decides which connections you can add.
Claude Code
Runs local MCP servers and plugins. The CommentKeyword plugin installs the MCP server and the comment-to-DM Skill in one step. The best fit if you script or edit Reels with Claude.
Claude Desktop
Runs local MCP servers from its config file (Settings → Developer → Edit Config), as well as directory connectors. CommentKeyword works here.
claude.ai in the browser
Connects only to remote servers by URL, such as directory connectors. CommentKeyword's MCP server runs locally today, so it can't connect here yet; a remote version is planned. You can upload the comment-to-DM Skill under Customize → Skills: it plans the CTA and writes the DM, and you create the automation in the CommentKeyword dashboard.
ChatGPT
Uses apps and remote connectors, not local servers, so CommentKeyword's MCP server can't run in the ChatGPT app yet; a remote version is planned. Codex, OpenAI's coding agent that you sign in to with your ChatGPT account, runs it today. Some scheduling tools have ChatGPT apps: Postiz, for example, is in ChatGPT's app directory as of October 2026.
Cursor, Windsurf and Codex
They run local MCP servers too. The setup for each one is on the Instagram MCP server page.
Prompts to try
Once the toolkit is installed, ask in your own words. For example:
- When someone comments GUIDE on my next post, reply "Sent! Check your DMs 📩" and DM them the checklist link. Show me before you create it.
- I'm editing this Reel and the CTA is "comment RECIPE". Make the CTA match in the voiceover, the overlay and the caption, then arm the DM for my next Reel.
- List my active keyword automations and pause PRICE.
- Point the GUIDE automation at my next Reel instead of the old post.
- Did GUIDE catch my last post?
Frequently asked questions
Can I connect Instagram to Claude for free?
Yes, for comments and DMs. CommentKeyword's Free plan includes the API and the MCP server, with 300 automated DMs a month and 3 active keywords, and the toolkit is open source. Writing captions or scripts needs no connection. Analytics and scheduling connectors have their own plans, and several have free tiers.
Can I use a personal Instagram account?
Not with tools that use Meta's official API, CommentKeyword included. You need a professional account (Business or Creator). You can switch in the Instagram app; a private profile can become public when you do.
Is it safe? Can my account get banned?
The safest route is the official API: you approve permissions through Meta's login and never share your password. Tools that log in with your password or a session cookie put the account at risk. No tool can promise zero risk, because spammy messaging breaks Meta's rules on any route. CommentKeyword only messages people who commented your keyword, with one private reply per comment, as Instagram allows.
Can Claude post to Instagram for me?
Not through CommentKeyword, which doesn't publish. Scheduling tools with a Claude connector or MCP server, such as Metricool or Buffer, can publish posts that Claude writes. Claude can also draft the caption and the script for you to post yourself.
Can Claude read or answer my Instagram DMs?
Not with CommentKeyword. Its MCP server doesn't give Claude access to your inbox or your messages. CommentKeyword sends the first DM automatically to people who comment your keyword. When they reply, you can answer in CommentKeyword's Inbox, or a CommentKeyword AI agent can continue the conversation (paid plans) within Instagram's 24-hour window.
Does it work on claude.ai or in ChatGPT?
Not fully yet. Both connect only to remote servers by URL, and CommentKeyword's MCP server runs locally today; a remote version is planned. On claude.ai you can upload the Skill to plan the CTA and the DM. If you use ChatGPT, Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, runs the MCP server when you sign in with your ChatGPT account. A custom GPT with Actions isn't a good route now: OpenAI no longer lets personal plans create new GPTs and is phasing custom GPTs out (December 11, 2026 for some Enterprise workspaces, with other plans expected to follow).
Is there an official Instagram connector for Claude?
No. As of October 2026, Meta has no official MCP server or Claude connector for organic Instagram; its official Ads MCP covers paid campaigns only. Every Instagram connector is built by a third party, so check how it connects to your account.

What Claude can do with it
What it doesn't do
Before it creates anything, Claude shows you the keyword, the DM and which posts it applies to, and waits for your OK.
